Language For Sale

We understand signs by looking (vision) and by reading (intellect), thus we read and understand almost immediately what we see.
Using salvaged shopfront signs, this series of art works are the result of an effort to break down the sense and meaning that we construct through language. In avoiding the use of words, letters and language solely as a signifying device and focussing instead on the formal properties of scale, colour, material, composition, typography, design aesthetic, the visual qualities and the visual field of representation give these mixed up letters a certain object-ness, a resolute solidity, and a physicality that language overlooks.
Removed from their previous space of instability and doubt, the signs are broken up, recontextualised and given a new order.
